Pebble Beach Golf Links for Genesis
Review #4423
Pebble Beach Golf Links
Redrawing like internet images in 1995
Gameplay
It runs at 1.5 FPS but actually plays pretty well. It's designed well anyway.
Changing direction causes the screen to redraw, like the Jack Nicklaus game, but its faster and mlfar more tolerable here.
Uses the power + dot on ball means of hitting. I prefer this over the single meter mechanic used on every nearly every other 16-bit golf game. I could consistently hit it just as I wanted to.
Putting also uses a grid which takes FOREVER to load but easily shows the slopes. It's tough to sink a shot but looks great.
Unfortunately the game is just really slow as a result of the horrible frame rate and long load times. This counteracts all the good things I've just mentioned.
Level Design
All the modes.
Theme
Minimal menus or options. Just pick up and play.
Art Style
Clean graphics. The only downside, and it's a big one, is the atrocious framerate. I'm not kidding when I say it's barely more than 1 FPS on the flyover, the ball cam, or when the grid is loading.
Audio
A groovy song that's straight out of Pilotwings. Unfortunately you can't disable or change it. It plays continuously whether you like it or not.
