PGA Tour 96

Gone with the Wind

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: Black Pearl

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Very streamlined. Just aim and shoot with a very readable power meter. At least the game plays quickly. The only real gripe I've got is the ridiculous wind meter which changes direction randomly every 1 second. The exact speed changes greatly from 0 to 20+ at the drop of the hat. In most golf games the wind doesn't change so you adjust your direction and stance and power to compensate but here you don't have time to change those. So you have to set them and then wait for the wind to be where you want it to be. This can lead to sitting and waiting for a minute before it is just right. Absolutely ruins what is otherwise ok controls and gameplay. Who thought this was a good idea?! Putting is weird. There is no elevation. The only way you miss a putt is by hooking it by hitting the power meter anywhere but right in the dot.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Lots of modes including Tournament, Skins, Match, and something called Shoot-out. I didn't play that cuz I don't care and it requires 4 players. 8 courses so lots of holes to play I guess.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

It's golf.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Prerendered sprites. Ugh Looks like an MS-DOS game from 1990. The animation is laughable and the little windows that pop up to report distance or give you a "Nice Shot" message are straight out of Windows 3.1. At least the courses look alright. Actually they look bad but much better than most of these horrible SNES golf games. My expectations are incredibly low.
