Pocky and Rocky 2

Fling those cards

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Natsume

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Lower difficulty than the original. You now have a companion who ostensibly helps you but the ninja girl does nothing, the big guy throws a rock that never hits anything, and Rocky shoots only occasionally. You can throw your companion for a bomb-like effect which is useful against bosses so it's not a complete waste, but the companion is a mostly wasted opportunity. Same control scheme as the original. Still a good time, but with some flaws.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Some levels have branching paths. Lots of empty areas with little or no enemies. There are houses to enter which have shops but mostly have NPCs who share mostly useless info. The layouts are good but again the aren't many enemies to inhabit them. The NPC huts really break up the action, especially since so many of them are useless. It's annoying to be playing and gamble on going in only to find that it was a waste of time. It worked in Mystical Ninja because you're exploring but this game is linear so it feels tacked on.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Rescue the princess. In ancient Japan. All the NPCs says nothing. Honestly the story gets in the way here much more than the original.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lovely

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Muted music. Good but not as good as the first

Overall Score: 74
