Rambo III

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1989

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Same issues as other would-be twin stick shooters. It's missing the second stick. Still, there's a lot to like here. You shoot straight when moving but you spread shoot back and forth when in a resting position. Very interesting. Secondary weapons include an utterly useless knife, a bow, and a bomb you must plant right next to your target. All three are mostly useless and a massive missed opportunity. One hit deaths. Boss fight levels take an over the shoulder view. They're incredibly simple and easy. Just take five and poop out to shoot between the regular volleys of the enemy. Responsive controls and good movement.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Mostly just move to the right and up, clearing enemies as you go. There's one indoor level where you find a hostage and escape. All levels look the same. The generic middle eastern military base with tents and guard towers.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Rambo!

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Very simple graphics. Looks like an NES or TG16 title. The same enemy sprite is used over and over. All levels look the same. No animation or effects. Minimal slowdown.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Not terrible music but nothing you'll be humming later.

Overall Score: 68
