Rex Ronan Experimental Surgeon

Not-so Fantastic Voyage

Genre: educational - n/a

Publisher: RayaSystems

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Incredibly difficult movement. Can't shoot and move and ground is uneven making it hard to hit the exact spot you want. Hit detection is bizarre. You have to clean off teeth. Feels like Mario Sunshine but with only 8 directional aim and even worse hit detection. Massive lag when jumping or attacking. Props for including an ever present map, even if it isn't needed since the levels are so short and linear Jump, shoot, and kick (which is utterly useless) All animations take ridiculous time to complete Between levels play a Gyruss-style shooting level. But you don't have to shoot anything, just avoid very infrequent enemy and then fly through a hole in a wall ahead kind of like Star Fox base levels. Enemies swarm and love to stun lock you. 10% draw distance

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Just a linear corridor. Nothing at all to do really. Powerups are scattered within the stuff you're cleaning but its all optional. You can just run to the right and finish a level in seconds

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

It's the Fantastic Voyage but without Rachel Welch in a wetsuit. Also, don't do drugs kids.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Prerendered sprites look awful. Backgrounds are pleasantly disgusting as I imagine they look like a person's insides. Some nice details like an animated display of Rex's current mental state, a nice hud, and an animated map.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Halfway decent pucks and good sound effects.

Overall Score: 15
