Soldiers of Fortune

Gauntlet outdoors

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Spectrum HoloByte

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Gauntlet outdoors gameplay Overhead view Breaks the action game cardinal sin - can't move while shooting This is 5 years after Smash TV why isn't it twin stick given that only one action button is used? Enemies and projectiles move incredibly slow so the only way to take damage is by getting overzealous and moving too quickly. You can instead move methodically and take out enemies from a distance to advance unscathed. No powerups or weapons to acquire that I could find.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Path meanders in all directions and between areas to battle a group of badguys. Kill all enemies and activate x number of beacons to open the ending. It's not bad but not terribly interesting either.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Dudes shooting guns. Has a steampunk feel, but with Shadowrun vibe.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Decent graphics, if you like all shades of brown Very chunky sprites Horrible and pervasive slowdown. Framerate drops in half when virtually any number of enemies appear onscreen

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Obnoxious two note music and annoying and inconsistent sound effects (bubbling mud is all you can hear)

Overall Score: 46

Review ID: 1243
