Star Control for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Star Control

I claim this pixel in the name of Earth

Genre: strategy - turn-based tactics

Publisher: Accolade

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Two modes - a Risk-like Planning phase and an Asteroids-esque Combat screen. The Planning has you pick a start system and either move, build, fortify, pass, or scuttle. I honestly have no idea what any of these things do. The constantly rotating star map is made of single pixel stars and is this barely readable. Combat is straightforward and horribly, horribly bad. If you thought momentum in Asteroids was bad just wait for this game. It's not unplayable, it's just painfully boring.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Lots of modes and options. You can play combat only, set the difficulty of the computer, have the computer play the planning or the combat for you, etc. There are also 18 different scenarios.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

It's Wing Commander minus any characters, visuals, or missions. Zero personality or presentation

Art Style Score: 0

Art Style Notes:

I hope you like black screens.
