Super Ninja Boy for SNES

Super Ninja Boy

Not-so Mystical Ninja

Genre: rpg - japanese

Publisher: CultureBrain

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Random battles but the battles themselves play like a beat-em-up. Interesting mashup of genres, but man are these battles tedious. Basically you can just stand in one place where the enemies will hop to and get immediately stun locked. So you mash mash mash away. Uggh Battles are weird. Enemies constantly spawn until for some reason the battle ends and you're declared the winner. I have no idea what the winning conditions are. Full of bugs. Enemies get stuck on open pits or in boxes. The whole things feels broken. Some of the worst hit detection in any SNES game. Not only do hits not register consistently but something as simple as stepping on a staircase or entering a door requires seemingly pixel perfect positioning. Gives Tecmo Secret of the Stars a run for its money for the title of "most frequent random battles". Occasional side scroller platform areas further cement this game's status as a Goemon clone. Controls in these sections are even worse than in the beat em up stages. Horrendous in every way imaginable.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Linear level and area designs. Everything feels like it's there because something had to be. It's an odd collection of RPG, beat em up, and platforming elements that wants to be awesome like Goemon but utterly fails to do anything well.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The two Ninja brother characters and NPCs throughout the game are cute. I want to like this game far more than I actually do.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Hilariously bad artwork, graphics, effects, and animation. Calling these NES-quality graphics is an insult to the NES. The sprites are cute but again have virtually no animation. Lazy stuff all over the place, like treasure chests that don't change appearance after they've been opened.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Music isn't horrible. It goes for a traditional Chinese theme.

Overall Score: 16
