Super Scope 6 for SNES

Super Scope 6

Nintendo's weakest minigame collection?

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

The LazerBlazer games all play the same - shoot everything and if you miss five targets the game ends. There are 30 levels so winning requires you to complete all levels without missing 5 shots. Good luck with that. You'll be bored after about 3 levels, much less 30. The puzzle-centric Blastris games are just awful since you can't move the tiles, like in all Tetris-like games. Instead you can only shoot them so you have so little control over what's happening. Ultimately this cartridge has a few tech demos but nothing resembling a game. Duck Hunt is far superior to this compilation.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Nintendo has a history of packing a bunch of minigames into a single package as a glorified tech demo for their new gimmicky hardware. This was the OG and was followed by much better games like Wii Sports and Nintendo Land, plus whatever 1-2-Switch was. This one has 6 games of varying quality: Blastris 1. A - Standard Tetris formula with the pieces falling left to right. 2. B - Match 3 where you shoot a falling tile to change its color. 3. Mole Patrol - Whack-a-mole: the lightgun game. Probably the best of the Blastris games. Shoot the purple moles but not the pink ones. LazerBlazer 4. Intercept - Missile Command: the lightgun game. This game can take a flying leap. Guessing how much lead you need to put on your shot is not fun and that's all you do the whole time. 5. Engage - Top Gun: the lightgun game. This is probably my favorite of the bunch. 6. Confront - Space Invaders: the lightgun game. Kind of fun.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Presented well with nice menus and score counters. The futuristic setting of the LazerBlazer games was a tease for the upcoming Battle Clash.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Nice sprites and artwork. The multiple layers of parallax scrolling in Intercept are impressive. Great animation and use of color. The puzzle games look awful but everything else is great.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Nice Nintendo sound design. The sounds of shots and hits are especially satisfying. Even the music is enjoyable.

Overall Score: 45
