Sword of Sodan

Sort of So Dumb

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

I'm not sure where to begin with this turd. How about the fact that you can only do five things - shuffle (not walk) forward, turn around (by pressing attack+left or right), attack, duck, and duck+attack. That's it. No jump. No movement of any kind. Easily the worst combat in an action game ever. The enemies are braindead, often walking right through you without bothering to do anything. Your attacks rarely hit them and they randomly attack and sometimes inflict damage even when they don't attack. Your movement is so stiff that you can't run in, attack, and then retreat fast enough. So whether or not you survive is entirely random. Even if it was faster it would still be awful as it is exceptionally monotonous. Shuffle, fight. Shuffle, fight. Make it stop!

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

I didn't come close to finishing the first level and I don't care to ever see another one. This game is a never-ending series of awful enemy encounters.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Yet another Conan and Red Sonja game. These things are a dime a dozen on the Amiga/Genesis.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Huge sprites are the only thing good I can say about this game. Too bad there are only a handful of sprites total in the entire game. Fine, I'll give it a 2 but only because I'm feeling generous.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

What sound? There's no music and the ambient sounds are minimal while the constant grunting of enemies and myself taking damage is incredibly annoying.

Overall Score: 6
