T2: The Arcade Game for SNES
Review #610
T2: The Arcade Game
Worth a couple of quarters
Gameplay
Gallery shooter that scrolls to the right. That's about all you need to know. Terminators pop in quickly, move a lot, and some are tiny so they're all very hard to hit. This is an arcade game after all. Also ridiculously difficult because of the arcade heritage. The first boss is completely impossible.
I can't imagine playing this with an actual Super Scope. With a mouse it's manageable but you still have to dart back and forth across the screen.
It plays very well but it's only about 5 minutes worth of gameplay. After that it's all a bunch of repetition. The cursor and enemies on screen scroll and scale smoothly, unlike similar games like Operation Thunderbolt, but they're much hard to hit than in Bazooka Blitzkrieg.
A major problem with the game is that you have a health bar and take damage but it's unclear what will hurt you. Enemies stop and shoot at you but there's never any indication that you're taking damage so it never "feels" like something bad is happening. The whole thing just feels like a demo and as a result I kind of zoned out after a while.
Level Design
Dunno. Couldn't get past the first level. I imagine it's all about the same on future levels.
Theme
Cool movie, but the game appears to only happen in the sad future. I've also never met a Terminator game I've ever liked so the movie tie-in in more of a turn off.
Art Style
Color is very washed out, making everything seem drab. That's what they were going for but it's still not attractive. The sprites animate well and well-drawn but there's really only one of them.
