Tecmo Super Bowl for Genesis

Tecmo Super Bowl

Football, with only the good part

Genre: sports - football

Publisher: Tecmo

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Feels a tad more laggy than the SNES version. Looks and plays like a video game Both offense and defense pick from the same set of 8 plays which makes for a rock-paper-scissors game-within-the-game. If you pick right then you overwhelm the other team for a big loss. The small number of plays allows you to recognize formations so you can anticipate a run or pass. Makes you feel like a middle linebacker without having to be an actual football player. Offense is fun too as you generally have plenty of time to survey the field and cycle through receivers to find the open man. The only knock is that with simplicity comes repetition but I enjoy this game immensely in small chunks anyway.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Exhibition and season modes Very simple play selection which limits the cognitive requirements of playing the game. It's as far from a sim as you can get and it's all the better for it.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

NFL and NFLPA licenses Minimal time between plays Music and between-play animations add to a dynamic, fun environment

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Teeny tiny players but you can see the entire screen.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Fantastic little clips that play during and after plays Low quality voice samples and sounds You do have to hear a whistle a lot and could've used a few more sound effects but overall very enjoyable

Overall Score: 72
