Toy Story for SNES

Image: MobyGames

Toy Story

Hasn't aged well

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Atrocious hit detection. Main form of attack is your pullstring which acts as a whip but I swear it only connects about 1/4 of the time. Low jump Plays a lot like the THQ games Float controls and ill-defined platforms make platforming a chore Levels are strictly horizontal, which is probably a limitation of the pseudo-3D graphics. Woody is more than half the screen tall making it nigh impossible to avoid taking damage.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Variety in level design. The first two levels are fetch quests where you remove obstacles to get NPCs to specific spots. Next level is a runner, kind of. Third level is a Micro Machines style racer, but you have to go slow to avoid crashing all the time Objectives aren't entirely obvious but an explanation is given at the start of each level.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Toy Story is cool. Presentation is so-so with a wall of text introducing each level

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Prerendered sprites are less than appealing. 3D effect of background effects is impressive. Everything is so huge that it feels like the screen is zoomed in.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Sound effects often play over each other and are played long after something occurs. Music is alright

Overall Score: 59
