Universal Soldier for Genesis
Review #4641
Universal Soldier
Turrican starring JCVD
Gameplay
It's Turrican
Difficulty is slightly better than Turrican but the same warts exist, namely no hit boxes, bad draw distance, inability to shoot up, cheap enemy placement, etc.
Minor improvements such as abundant weapon and health drops make it slightly more tolerable, but still a sub-par experience.
Level Design
Go to the right. Lots of cheap enemy placement just out of reach and screen filling enemy swarms make it nearly impossible to avoid damage. Feels like a chore to inch forward in the stage.
Theme
I remember wanting to watch this movie so bad as a kid. It was rated R so I didn't see it until many years later. The movie tie-in gives the Turrican gameplay some more stakes.
Reminds me of Journey to Silius for some reason.
Art Style
Marked improvement in the backgrounds over Turrican, but still below average for this sort of game. The character designs are decent this time around and animation is still good. One layer of parallax scrolling is better than none, but nothing in this game will wow you. Much better use of color and sprite artwork.
Audio
Some nice tunes and sounds
