Virtua Racing for Genesis

Virtua Racing

Glorified tech demo

Genre: racing - arcade

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Several camera options are the only source of variety in the gameplay. I love how the track has sloped corners like a real track would. Makes turns more tolerable although there's still a lot of tap tap tapping required. Controls overall feel alright but there's not much to do here. After 10 min you've seen everything.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Three tracks. Total. They're decent but sheesh, that's the entire score of this game? That's Race Drivin' level of content.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Not much to report. It's a simple arcade setup with little

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

There's low polygon graphics and then there's this game where you can count the polygons on two hands. In a post-Star Fox world this game looked antiquated when it was brand new. Still, I'll give it props for the cameras and the good performance. Still, the less I look at it the better.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I was expecting some rocking tunes to rival Ridge Racer but the music here is pedestrian by comparison. The sound effects are great tho.

Overall Score: 37
