Wings 2: Aces High

There's slow. And then there's Wings 2

Genre: simulation - flight

Publisher: Namco

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

No HUD, no speed, no map, no crosshairs, no nuthin. The barest of bones. Controls are just the d-pad and shooting. That's it. Aiming is an absolute crapshoot. Super slow gameplay. Some of the slowest framerates you'll see in the 16-bit era. Controls are very difficult with super weird physics. Nearly impossible to fly straight.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The kinds of levels: 1. Dogfighting 2. Bombing 3. Strafing No variety other than the number of targets, so once you've played one level you've played them all.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Bi-plane warfare is...uh, boring. The concept is ok but pretty boring presentation. Introduces your pilots and you can level them up with a skill tree...but I don't think the four skills do anything.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Looks good in a screenshot but runs just above the Race Drivin' Mendoza line. Kudos for being ambitious but curse you on the execution.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

One track of music. Sound is minimal but ok

Overall Score: 25
