Battle Dodge Ball for SFC

Battle Dodge Ball

An obvious misuse of mechs

Genre: sports - dodgeball

Publisher: Banpresto

Year: 1991

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

I've tried to like this dodgeball game series but just can't do it. The controls are so stiff and unreliable. Everything seems random. Catching or avoiding throws happens when the game feels like it. There's no way to effectively aim, nor is there much reason to. Having to pick up the ball is a hassle since again the hit detection is so wonky that it rarely happens when you want it to. You wind up mashing and moving to get in just the right spot, and this sometime results in an accidental weak throw because pick up and throw are the same button. Don't get me wrong, it's fun for a couple of minutes but there's very little skills required or rewarded, so the game gets old quickly.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Seven arenas. Like most sports title the differences are purely cosmetic but it's nice to have some variety.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I mean, it's dodgeball, but the SD characters always get me. Way more fun of a setting than most sports games boast.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Looks great for such an early 16-bit title. Nothing too special going on but the sprites are all colorful and cute.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Has some great tracks. Each levels has its own theme. Nothing is listen to outside the game but it fits the game well.

Overall Score: 53
