Ghost Chaser Densei for SFC

Ghost Chaser Densei

Ghost in the Final Fight

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Banpresto

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Three playable characters (guy, girl, robot). Sluggish movement and laggy inputs. Only one attack button, but lots of attacks using SF2 inputs. Very generous hit detection. I like that you do a kick to attack anyone around you when you get up after having been knocked on your back. Grabs and throws are easy to use. Low difficulty on the Easy mode. Enemies don't swarm or are overly concerned about surrounding you.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Follows the Final Fight template. A couple of levels with boss and then mini games between levels. The levels themselves are standard fare (city, sewer, cave, etc) but they have some platforms and verticality and good variety. Lots of breakable items. Not many weapons to pick up though. Good variety in the waves of enemies. Most waves are 2-3 enemies although up to 4 can be on screen. The first two levels have humans, robots, and mutant Blanka looking guys.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Near future Neo-Tokyo setting. What's not to like? The opening has a Tron vibe, the story is like Ghost in the Shell, but the game is more reminiscent of a generic brawler.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Looks and animates very well. Attractive character models that look more realistic than most games in the genre. The backgrounds are sort of lifeless and don't do much for the game, but the action looks great.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Nice, solid crunchy sound effects and pleasant music. On par with some of the mid-tier Capcom or Konami brawlers.

Overall Score: 75
