Go Go Ackman

Kid Alucard

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Banpresto

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Controls are as responsive as any Capcom or Konami game from this generation. Feels great! Generous healthbar. Attack using a punch, a jump kick, or a pickup including a gun, sword, or boomerang. Also a screen clearing bomb. Enemies just run around and take one hit so they're easy to kill or avoid.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Fairly long levels. Mostly well-designed levels with a variety of platforms, slopes, open spaces and tight quarters. However, there are quite a few blind jumps and cheap enemy placement, so you need to move slowly. Luckily, it's not pervasive. Mid-level stages with a gimmick, like riding in a car or on a floating platform similar to that ocean stage in Super Ghouls n Ghosts. Again, it reminds me of those Capcom and Konami 16-bit games.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

You're a devil fighting angels. Kind of fun to be the bad guy! Comical theme with goofy characters. Your nemesis looks like Cupid and each level tries to find an assassin to kill you. All characters have exaggerated expressions and reactions. Very cute.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Your character looks like Kid Dracula in a t-shirt. Bright and colorful graphics. Backgrounds are well-drawn and have parallax. Excellent sprites and animation.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

It's not objectively bad, but I hated the music. It's silly but more lively than the action on screen. It also doesn't have much structure to it. To my ear it sounds like a smattering of random notes. The second stage is a Jamaican steel drum song that gets old. Still, it's not terrible and the sound effects are lovely.

Overall Score: 80
