Holy Umbrella: Dondera no Mubo

Umbrella puns to shower your day with laughter

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: Naxat Soft

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

There are two distinct play styles. An overhead reminiscent of Zelda where you explore towns and talk to NPCs. Then there's the side scrolling platforming areas with combat. You swing your umbrella to attack so It plays like a sword action title. Movement is very slow at first although you soon get the ability to run by holding y the Y button. And you gain different elemental abilities for your umbrella which allow you to freeze enemies and blow wind and make fire etc. There's some light RPG elements as well such as inns to regain health and save and potions you can buy at stores. The game is quite easy and feels like a introductory adventure game. Like an easy Zelda 2. Please okay but everything just feels slow and not optimized. With a few improvements and more responsive controls, this could have been a really good game, but as it is, it's decent.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Stages are very short. You spend most of your time in town talking with people and going on very simple fetch quests, with a strong emphasis on simple. The umbrella power-ups are fun, but again are used to solve dead, simple puzzles. It's a pretty low-key game.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The plot is an Isekai manga. Yes I looked that up. It's a story where a protagonist is inexplicably transported into an alternate dimension and must figure out how to return home. It's not unlike The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. There's an awful lot of text to read, but the story is quite funny. It's got a sense of humor s maybe similar to something like Mario and Luigi.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The game has a decent look to it. I wouldn't get too excited about it but it's got decent animation and a consistent look and feel in the sprites and backgrounds and what not. They're just not super interesting to look at. Your character in particular looks like Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece, but without any personality.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

You a lot of music in this game and most of it's pretty good.. I wouldn't say it compares at all to similar adventure titles, but none of it annoyed me so that's something. It doesn't have a lot of layers but the compositions are good. I'm tempted to give it a three, but I'll go with a four instead.

Overall Score: 73
