Hyper Iria for SFC

Hyper Iria

Not likely to make you forget Samus

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Banpresto

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a bit like B.O.B., but with far less responsive movement and attacks. You can jump around (with a double jump) and fire a gun, but your main attack is a standing punch or jump kick. This is due to the imprecise firing of your gun and the restrictive ammo for your weapon. Movement feels more like Prince of Persia than Contra, making it hard to platform or hit enemies. Plus, they take multiple hits and love to stun lock you. With all that said, it's really not a terrible experience, gameplay-wise. You can dash to move quickly and your moveset gives you a fair amount of offensive options.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

This is where the game truly fails. You can choose from four levels to visit, which is great, but the levels themselves are wide open labyrinths with little or no sense for where to go or what to do. Super Metroid, this is not.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Speaking of Metroid, the setting of this game is an obvious ripoff of the much better Metroid series. You're a hot female bounty hunter in a mechanized suit and a pistol to shoot aliens with. Unfortunately, there's precious little charm. Each stage behind with a cutscene where your AI partner explains the mission. Boring

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The graphics aren't terrible, although they are fairly simple. Each stage has a distinct biome, which is nice, but there's very little variety within each stage. Enemy sprites are static and feature almost no animation.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music wouldn't feel out of place in a 70's B-movie. It's got a decidedly disco vibe.

Overall Score: 54
