Iron Commando: Koutetsu no Senshi

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Poppo

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Fast movement. Enemies swarm around you at lightning speed. Every enemy has a weapon - knife, bat, and guns! Plays like The Punisher. No special moves. Grenades are a desperation move. You can hold up to 5. Short reach and limited moveset - just a punch, grab, and jump kick. The grab is almost useless because enemies attack while.you hold an enemy and the throw is too slow. The most effective strategy is to constantly jump-kick back and forth but this is tiring. Extremely difficult. Every enemy hurts you. Enemies always come in waves of three.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Lovely foreground and background elements. But not much going on, really. Pretty standard stuff. The first level has foreground elements which block most of the screen. Pretty annoying.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The game starts with a sci-fi, aliens crashing on earth setting, but then it's just some beefy dudes fighting in normal streets.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Huge, burly sprites. Not much variety on the enemies but what's here looks great. Screen shake adds a visceral tone to the game's style. Loads of other effects like lighting make this one of the best looking beat em ups on the system. The complete lack of slowdown is incredible, which is what bumps this from a 4 to 5.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Satisfying, crunchy sound effects. Decent music that's drowned out by the other sounds.

Overall Score: 64

Review ID: 1687
