Magna Braban: Henreki no Yuusha

Silly Ogre Battle

Genre: rpg - japanese

Publisher: ASK

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

It looks like a standard RPG, but the battles play out like Ogre Battle. You can stop the fight at any time and change your tactics, but your three party members attack on their own like an RTS. I like it! Unfortunately, a couple of problems hold this game back. First, it's got the same movement problem that plagued the Aretha games. When you hit a wall you instantly turn to the right or left, whichever direction you were previously moving. This is supremely annoying. I can't express to you just how obnoxious it is. Just walking up a ladder or into a door is an absolute chore. You must carefullly line yourself up and hope that you don't clip a corner and walk along the side of the building. Ok, annoying but livable, I suppose. The second problem was what I shared at the start - the game plays itself. There's just not much to do. It's a fun and silly game, but from a pure gameplay perspective, all you do is walk around. The game plays itself. Lastly, the encounter rate is atrocious. Easily the worst in an RPG I've ever played. I'd say it averages about 3-5 steps. It's so bad that I regularly forget which direction I was headed. This would be an easy 4 if not for the horrendous encounter rate.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Pretty standard fetch quests and "go here next" game design. Nothing spectacular, but it's enjoyable.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

I really enjoyed the silly story. You and your friends are mistaken for tough and skill fighters after all other warriors in the kingdom are killed. It's essentially the "Seven in one blow" fairy tale. The dialogue and story is what drives this game.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Decent graphics and an isometric view in battles similar to Ogre Battle. I like that the battle sprites look almost identical to those in the overhead. Easily recognizable.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Mid. The music is fine, I guess.

Overall Score: 69
