Nintama Rantarou for SFC

Image: MobyGames

Nintama Rantarou

Looks like Goemon, plays like Home Alone

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Culture Brain

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Long unskippable cutscenes! Over 5 mins before you gain control. Floaty, laggy controls. Barely playable. Stuttering performance and pervasive slowdown. Two weapons - sword or shurikens. Shuriken moves about as fast as you do. Switch between by pressing X Buggy. Can't run up slopes sometimes and switching doesn't work while you're in the air.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Bizarre. The game begins with a series of mini games in a lengthy tutorial: Hogan's Alley as a platformer (shoot shurikens) Button mashing runner Climb up the walls Crouch and crawl Then you get a couple of actual levels with standard platforming fare but with almost no enemies. Then it's back to more tutorials. There's no save so you'll have to do this every time you play! No thanks.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Silly kid ninja hijinks. Very cute and fun. Reminds me of early 90s cartoons like Rugrats.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Cute sprites with nice animation. Bright and colorful. Incredible simple backgrounds look like the stuff in THQ or Nova games! Looks ok in still but horrible in movement. Horrific performance. The graphics are moving at super slow frame rate. Stuttered, jilted movement. Hard to look at.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Discount Goemon Japanese music. No sound effects except for an awful jumping sound.

Overall Score: 9

Review ID: 1771
