Psycho Dream for SFC
Review #2283
Psycho Dream
Castlevania meets Splatterhouse, with some slowdown
Gameplay
Starts out like a Castlevania game, but once you're powered up it becomes more like a run and gun. The goal is not get hit and lose you're powerups. They're plentiful so getting powered back up is easy.
Very slow movement. You can jump but it's best to stay grounded.
Almost good, but as is it's theme is far more interesting than its gameplay.
Crippling slowdown.
Level Design
There's a lot of varied terrain, but by and large you're just walking to the right. Almost no platforming to speak of. Lots of foreground elements which block your view. The stages drag on far longer than they need to by repeating the same events.
Theme
Ooh, a legit horror 16-bit title! Serious Castlevania, Splatterhouse, and Majuu vibes. You're in a modern setting but with huge bugs and slugs and other Lovecraftian monsters. Super creepy. There's some sexual content, including at least one boss that is a not so subtle dong.
Art Style
At first tit looks pretty basic, but a lot of interesting graphical elements are scattered throughout the stages. It becomes quite fun to look at everything. It looks a bit like the Wolf Team games El Viento and Earnest Evans. But again, there's tons of slowdown and a lot of graphical glitches.
Audio
Love the spooky music! It's almost great, but way up there for moody 16-bit soundtracks. A lot of the music would feel right at home in a Castlevania title.
