Rudra no Hihō for SFC

Rudra no Hihō

Game Genie as a magic system

Genre: rpg - japanese

Publisher: Square

Year: 1996

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

The main gimmick in this game is the customizable magic system called Mantras. Basically, you can create a word using any letters of the English alphabet (a max of 12). The best thing about this is that you don't have to earn anything. Certain prefixes and suffixes can be discovered during a playthrough, but with a cheat sheet you can create any mantra right from the start of the game. That means you can have INCREDIBLY powerful, useful, AND cheap magic right from the start of the game. You can also learn them by fighting enemies. It's a cool system and one of the most ambitious and creative systems I've seen in an RPG. The rest of the game is good but not great. By this point everything Square was making was good so that's not surprising. My only complaints are the lack of an auto-equip and an inability to carry more than 9 of any item. Still, on the whole this is an excellent RPG.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Again, pretty standard Square level stuff. The best feature is the scenario based nature of the story. You can choose one of three stories from the outset.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Nothing about the story hooked me. Standard fantasy setting.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

The overhead artwork is good, albeit with small sprites. The battle art, on the other hand, is incredible. I thought I was playing Octopath Traveler.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Oh look. Another fantastic soundtrack from Square. Ho hum.
