Shounen Ninja Sasuke

Sunsoft's Goemon

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like a beat-em up with a 3D field to move around in. Enemies hop around quickly and are very aggressive. Your normal walking movement is incredibly slow but jumping is crazy fast and high, like Ninja Spirit. The best strategy is to jump around and perform jump kicks. Enemies sometimes hit you but if you can hit them right at the top of their head it's an OP attack. Other attacks include a punch, kick (both have the the same reach), a grab and throw which is rare becaus of how quickly everything is moving, and a shoulder dash ala Wario Land. I believe some weapons can be purchased in shops but I couldn't figure out how to make use of them. Unfortuantely enemies are damage sponges and roma in packs of 4-5. Again, they're fast, aggressive, and have their AI dialed up to seek and surround you at all times. Because you're high flying all the time it's hard to get on the same plane as enemies. Luckily hit detection is fairly generous. Overall movement feels great and combat is mostly fun. Several enemy types keep things interesting. RPG elements such as leveling and inventory management.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Has a similar feel to Legend of the Mystical Ninja where you can move between different connected areas. It has a very open-world feel with no markers or signposts pointing you toward any specific objective. Ther's barely any dialogue either, so I don't think it's lost in translation. I'm just completely lost and have no idea what I'm trying to do. I love the interconnected areas, but aside from their visual appeal it all feels the same. I found a map that shows your location and a glowing red dot where you need to go but I can't figure out how it corresponds to the actual environment I'm in. You can save, so I assume this is a big long adventure, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Very Japanese.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

I LOVE the visual style of this game. Most of the time there's no HUD whatsoever. Sprites are small but detailed, cute, well-drawn, and well-animated. Backgrounds are lush and colorful. There's some slowdown when certain enemies get on screen but for the most part the performance is excellent.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Lovely music! But what else would you expect from early 90's Sunsoft, right? There's a city theme, a rocking main theme, and a boss theme

Overall Score: 72
