Super Final Match Tennis

FILA product placement

Genre: sports - tennis

Publisher: Human Entertainment

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Very slow movement. Hitting the ball feels fine but the lateral and vertical movement around the court is too slow, making it hard to get to the ball. Also, the buttons don't always do what you think they should. B is clearly a hard, low hit, but A sometimes is a soft, high ball and othertimes is a long lob. X and Y also feel random. Ths is nit-picky, but there's a 5 second delay when pausing and unpausing the game. Very strange.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

All the standard modes: Exhibition, world tour, and training. The training mode is weird. You'll probably only use it once. You pick the number of serves and volleys you want to practice. I guess it's a welcome feature.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

So many menus! It requires about 10 clicks to get into a match. And the menus show character portraits that look nothing like the rest of the game. Also, there's quite a bit of terrible Engrish going on, like the words "MENU END" appearing wnytime you're sent back to the menu. Or "YOU SELECT EXHIBITION" when you start a match. That said, the in-game artwork and sound and everything gel well. It's also woth noting that there's a lot of FILA product placement. Didn't see that too much in the 16-bit days.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Excellent in-game artwork. The mismatched player portraits are the only weird aspect.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Dorky menu music. In-game sound effects are fine, if boring.

Overall Score: 67
