Super Tekkyuu Fight!

Maceman

Genre: puzzle - overhead

Publisher: Banpresto

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

It plays a bit like Bomberman but instead of bombs you throw a mace to hit your enemies. All enemies take four hits and they will walk or charge right through you. So you can't just get in front of them and beat on them. At least not all of them. So you have to hit them from the side as much as possible. Your movement is limited to four directions on existing paths and a jump that sends you two spaces in any direction. This makes it possible to fall into the abyss so you have to carefully maneuver around the level. The controls unfortunately are kind of finicky. It's hard to align yourself just right so you can turn at an intersection. That's my main knock against the controls. Breaking certain blocks drops power-ups that improve your mace and give you help. You also have a screen clearing power bomb you can get. Overall it's good and I had fun with it but probably isn't something I'd go back to. Also, there's a lot of slowdown. A crazy amount.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The levels are broken up into sets of, I don't, know 8 or 10 stages plus a boss. At the start of the game you can choose from one of six or seven areas again each with a bunch of levels plus a boss. I like that you've got this flexibility, Mega Man style, which certainly helps with replayability. The levels themselves are interesting and varied. It's generally the same four or five enemies in each level. Some that charge at you, some to punch some that shoot projectiles, etc. The difficulty doesn't really ramp up from level to level. Because you can choose any Area to begin with there isn't a ramping up of difficulty as you progress from stage to stage. So you don't feel tested as you go. Still, it's good stuff.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

It's the SD crowd, with Ultraman and Gundam and Kamen and whoever else.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The character designs are good, as usual for these SD titles. As far as puzzle games go, this one is nice looking. The animation in particular is noteworthy.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Each area has its own theme song plus a boss theme. The songs are fast-paced and catchy even if they loop quickly, like a Bubble Bobble or a Bomberman.

Overall Score: 70
