Cliffhanger for Sega CD

Cliffhanger

Aren't cliffhangers supposed to encourage people to come back?

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Sony Imagesoft

Year: 1993

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Seems like bad guys are on a slightly different plane than you. You have to be perfectly lined up to attack but they can be slightly above or below you. Punch and kick buttons, but you can only jump+kick. No jump+punch. Also can run by double tap+punch but no run+kick. Enemies have two attacks worth of i-frames after getting knocked down so run away after hitting them. Enemies surround and gang up like crazy.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Absolutely nothing in the first level. Completely devoid of any details or obstacles or anything but the same two enemies. Level 2 is a wall climb. Two snipers sit on platforms and shoot at you in the closest of 6 directions. They're easy to avoid but you can actually climb onto the platform they're on only to discover that they're invincible. Someone forgot to finish coding this game. Level 3 is the end of the game. Not intentionally, mind you, but because it's unbeatable. You're running away from an avalanche and the turbo tunnels in Battletoads has nothing on this level. It's impossible.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Decent movie. Mountain Rambo. Numerous movie clips are included before and after stages. I love that they included these! Still, just go watch the movie instead.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Far better than the SNES or Genesis version, although there isn't much to look at. The snowboarding scene looks great.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

CD quality music straight from a movie score. Great stuff. Sound effects aren't as bad as the console versions but still aren't good. When you kick it sounds like tearing a carboard box. Sly might want to have his hip joints looked at cuz they don't sound good.

Overall Score: 33
