Shanghai for PCE

Shanghai

How to not win at a puzzle game

Genre: tabletop - board game

Publisher: Hudson Soft

Year: 1987

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Move a cursor, pick matching tiles to remove them, but only if one of the sides of the tiles is free. Uggh, Mahjong is the dumbest game ever. Imagine playing a board game where 90+% of the time you cannot win. There's something therapeutic about clearing a board. It's aggravating most of the time but there's satisfaction in finishing something.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Only a handful of boards to choose from. No configuration settings.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

Boring Chinese game. No personality. Just a static board

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Incredibly pixelated which makes it hard to differentiate between some tiles.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Virtually no sound. Music is super repetitive. Best to turn it off at which point the game is silent.

Overall Score: 19

Review ID: 8124
