Aero Fighters

Bring your own quarters

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Mc O'River

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This is the most arcadey of all the shoot em ups on the system. And by that I mean it's unfairly difficult. Nigh impossible, I'd say. Basically it's bullet hell and your plane moves considerably slower than the bullets. Missing a lot of QoL features that other vertical shooter have, such as adjustable speed or weapon upgrades. This game does let you upgrade your weapon but it's the only weapon you'll ever get and it's just bullets going straight forward. Oh and there's no rapid fire! What the heck guys?! You have to press and release over and over again like U.N. Squadron.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Love the level design. Enemy waves come frequently and with a great deal of variety which adds to the difficulty but also makes the game very engaging. I'll take this over the sparsely populated shooters like D-Force.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Very similar to U.N. Squadron. It's a near-future setting with modern-looking ships and enemy designs. Love it. However, you pick up money but you don't get to spend it on anything so the story, as it were, is forgettable.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Very impressive artwork and sprites. The effects look great as well, like explosions and such. Enemies take damage which makes them change color which is a satisfying visual language. Slowdown pulls down the overall look of the game, however.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Pumping music. Good stuff. The explosive sounds are meaty and satisfying.

Overall Score: 59
