Alien 3 for Genesis
Review #4016
Alien 3
If only they had removed the time limit and increased the draw distance
Gameplay
Far more action oriented than the SNES version.
Controls are slow and laggy. Movement is a chore and most weapons have a warmup phase. You can't fire immediately, enemies Rush at you quickly, and you get a 30% draw distance, so it's a test of reflexes. This forces you to inch along.
A major part of the game is climbing up and down ladders which are hard to get on and off.
You've got four weapons (gun, grenade launcher, flamethrower, and the utterly useless hand grenade. Pick up ammo refills throughout the stages.
You've also got a useless radar which looks cool anyway.
Could've been awesome with some refinement.
Level Design
Mazes. Mazes. Mazes. With an oppressive time limit to boot. At least the areas have visual landmarks but man you have to have every area memorized in order to navigate. At the very least just remove the time limits!
There are 12 missions which each average about 4-5 minutes plus a boss fight after every third level.
Theme
Alien 3 is where everything went wrong with this franchise. This game ignores the plot and one-Alien premise in favor of an Aliens-like setting.
The ambiance within the game is great as well so props
Art Style
The xenomorphs look great! Other sprites are ok and have simple animations. The backgrounds are dynamic and full of contrasting colors. The HUD is also nice with a huge arcade-style font.
Audio
Lively music throughout although there are only a handful of tracks. They do the job. The sound effects are straight out of the movie. At least the guns and flamethrower and grenade launcher sound good.
