Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle for Genesis

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

The pre-Sonic mascot. Also the pre-sales mascot.

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1989

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

An obvious Mario wannabe, but a terrible one at that. Extremely floaty and imprecise controls. Midair corrections are nearly impossible. Hit detection feels wrong, but it's not about hitting the hitbox but rather the timing. Each time you jump you automatically kick but it doesn't become active for a few frames and even then I'm not sure what part of the foot with deal damage. So I guess it's both the hitbox and the timing. One hit death. The paper rock scissors minigame between levels can bite me

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Incredibly boring. Enemies are slow moving and so are difficult to avoid. You have to kill them which is hard with the awkward movement and hit detection. Cheap enemy placement, like moles in level 2 which pop out of the ground without any warning.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

You're some sort of monkey in a world with limited personality.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Looks like an SMS title. Tiny sprites, no animation, no effects, etc. This is one of the least 16-bit looking Genesis platformers. Surprisingly there's some parallax scrolling. Only one layer but it's something.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Yuck
