Alien 3 for SNES

Alien 3

Zero Suit (and bald) Samus

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: LJN

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Squirrelly jumping puts a damper on otherwise good controls. Enemy AI is stupid but at least they follow understandable patterns. The real problem is that most enemies are ankle high so you have to crouch to hit them. Oh and they spawn infinitely which is lame. You have to know the layout of the map, go to your objective immediately or else you will run out of ammo just wandering around. Love the weapons - machine gun, flamethrower, and grenade launcher.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Ok I love the mission based game design, although they don't give you a map so you have to memorize it while at a terminal. Uhh, ok. The missions require you to navigate an open world map that is a hub and spokes model, so it's easy to get around but also overly simple. At least the part that I saw. There are tons of dead ends and useless paths so it's kind of annoying to play without a map and a walkthrough. You're discouraged from exploring by the ever-spawning enemies and limited ammo.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

When it released this was the worst Alien movie. I've never seen it but this one seems to deviate greatly by putting you against a huge swarm of Aliens. Oh well, it makes for a decent gaming experience.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Very well drawn and animated sprites and backgrounds. Most areas are dark and drab, but that's the fault of the movie tie-in. The enemy designs are very nice.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Atmospheric sounds are less music than they are ambiance. It works. The sounds are disappointing though. Everything is so quiet muted that it gives off a bored feel. Nothing feels satisfying.

Overall Score: 72
