Altered Beast
Wise fwom yourw gwaveGenre: action - punch n kick
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1989
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Simple brawler. It's an autoscroller where you kick or punch slow moving enemies. Your kick is ground level so kicking a tall enemy requires a jump kick. You're mostly committed after jumping so you have to plan your attacks carefully. Controls are counterintuitive, like pressing down to duck in order to attack upward. Hit detection is also a bit strange as sometime you bounce off while other times they deal damage. Some enemies have weird hitboxes like the stupid level 4 (fire dragon) and 5 (rhino) bosses. Collect three orbs in each level to morph into an OP beast mode, like a wolf, dragon, bear, or tiger. It reminds me of a really slow Ghouls n Ghosts
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Levels are about 60 seconds long and there are 5 of them. Yeah this game is short.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Zombies and fantasy setting. Feels a bit like Clash of the Titans.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Huge sprites. Enemies are well drawn but poorly animated. Background and foreground elements are decent. I know I complain about Genesis games being too dark but this game feels way too light. Everything looks pastel. Instead of red, you've got pink. Just looks weird given the setting of the game. It has its charms. Your tiny head on a huge body is pretty comical.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Voice samples are silly and are repeated on every stage. Music fits the game but is extremely simple with no layers.
Overall Score: 41
