Alisia Dragoon for Genesis

Alisia Dragoon

Samus/Red Sonja crossover

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Rather unique combat. You fire lightning as your primary weapon. There's a meter which charges up and at full strength your lightning clears the screen. The best strategy is to inch forward and clear the screen as soon as enemies appear, then wait until your meter recharges and inch forward again. You have a familiar which attacks independently and has its own health bar. If its health gets too low, you can switch to a different one. I think there are three different familiars you can cycle through. This reminds me of Kirby Superstar. Movement feels great. The controls are very responsive. The only problem is again that you don't get to move quickly. You basically inch forward and duck down and attack. The gameplay gets old rather quickly.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The levels are really well designed. You can go up a little bit and backtrack to find power-ups for you or your familiar. The foreground and background vary from level to level and are interesting. Platforms are easy to spot and easy to navigate between. The only real problem is that enemies either rush on screen quickly or appear which again encourages you to itch forward very slowly.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Feels like a Red Sonja or Conan the Barbarian setting? Even the main character's model looks a bit like Red Sonja.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Great visual effects like the lightning and explosions and such. The backgrounds have some parallax scrolling and are well drawn. Sprites also look nice and the HUD is easy to read. The graphics have a Ghouls n Ghosts vibe going on, which is a good thing.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Lovely and lovely music. Some sounds are lame but most are good
