Animaniacs

Slapstick Platforming

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Straight up platformer. Doesn't use a multiplane beatemup view like the SNES version. Very slow movement. Other than some tricky platforming this is a very easy game. The challenge is in collecting stars but it's completely optional. In this way it reminds me of the Yoshi games. You can toggle between the three characters like in Ahh Monsters! It takes a couple of seconds to switch between characters and their attacks are slow which adds to the game's overall sluggish feel. There are virtually no enemies in the game. Instead, the platforming and environmental hazards are the main obstacles.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

There's a fair amount of variety between levels. There's some standard platforming and then a level where you're on a moving platform and then a cave the ends in a boss battle. It feels like so many other Konami or Capcom licensed platformers of the time. At the same time it doesn't stand out in any way. It feels like it's borrowing from everything but not creating anything.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Brings in the atmosphere and humor of cartoon
