Axelay for SNES

Axelay

Make Axelay 2 you cowards

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Weapons are selected prior to the mission so there are no powerups to worry about. Toggling through weapons is simple. One of those games you have to hold down two buttons... not my favorite thing to do. Very responsive controls. Hit detection is sketchy in the from-behind stages.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Ok the from-behind stages have not aged well and must be endured in order to get to the much better side view levels, but each level has excellent design. It's just a shame there are only 6. This game is well worth playing in order to see all of its interesting set pieces.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

You're not a faceless spaceship, you're a family man avenging the destruction of the Earth and your wife and kids. What an intro!

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Incredible artwork, from the epic intro cutscene to the sprites and enemy designs, to the pseudo-3d effects of the behind stages. The boss designs are also incredible. Fantastic pixel artwork all around

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Some of the best music ever. On any console. The sound effects are equally good. This is honestly the best thing about the game.

Overall Score: 85
