Batman Returns for Genesis

Batman Returns

Konami didn't make this one

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like the first Genesis Batman game but much faster. Has many of the same warts like poor hit detection and enemies that gang rush you for cheap hits. Movement is faster but still slow. The gimmick is more use of the grappling hook but it's weird. Grabbing a platform directly above you is the same as the first game - stop completely, point up, and then shoot it. You can also fire it while jumping. Sometimes. When you don't intend to. I couldn't figure out how to do it consistently so it was really a point of frustration. You've got special items and weapons but the animation to use them is so slow and their attack range is so limited that they're rarely useful.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Blind jumps, endless pits, and cheap hits galore. I found no joy in jumping around the rooftops. Enemies like to park just outside your range and throw projectiles. It's great.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Not a fan of the movie. Unlike the a SNES version this doesn't seem to follow the script.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Huge sprites which look quite nice. Batman is a beefy dude. Everything else is so ugly though. The only colors are purple and black and the artwork is pixelated and lacking in any detail. The backgrounds are hideous.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Decent but forgettable music. There's a unique track in every level anyway. The first one is the worst of the bunch.

Overall Score: 43
