Battletoads In Battlemaniacs

Bad Toads

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Tradewest

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Really bad hit detection. Enemies take a ton of hits and you can't hit two at the same time so if you're engaged with one then the other can get in cheap hits. It's just not much fun to play because you have to struggle to get one enemy alone, especially with how small the arena is and how enormous all sprites are. No health drops at all. Screen scrolling is awkward - it doesn't quite follow your movement so you have to tap-tap-tap to move it a bit at a time. If you hold to the right it only give you about 20% draw distance so you risk running into enemies just off screen.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Boring when compared to the other two Battletoads games. And the difficulty is going to prevent you from seeing most levels anyway. The first level is the standard brawler and is quite repetitive. The second level is a vertical shaft but again it feels soulless and slow. The third level is an autoscroller where you slide along on a hockey puck. It's visually impressive but boring with extremely simple patterns that repeat over and over again. It's difficult only because it's so monotonous that you lose interest. Oh, and the fourth level is that stupid speeder bike thing. Again. And this time it's not as easy as the original game. Uggh this game is impossible.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Same old stuff

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Impressively enormous sprites. Too big, in fact. Some of the effects are truly incredible, like the reflection in level 3. But on the whole I don't like the zoomed in camera.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

While playing this game my son came in and watched. I finally shut it off in frustration and he said, "wow that game is pretty bad...but it sounds good." I tend to agree.

Overall Score: 48
