Battletoads & Double Dragon

Battletoads 2

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Tradewest

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Forget Battlemaniacs, this is the real sequel to Battletoads. Unfortunately the controls aren't as precise as the NES original. This results in a much higher difficultly than it would otherwise have and a ton of cheap hits. The name of the game is memorization to anticipate what comes next. If you do you can deal with most everything with ease. If not the enemies and environment hazards are happy to beat you to a pulp in seconds. Thankfully there are a ton of health drops which ease the difficulty somewhat. The only real addition to the Battletoads formula are human enemies, to throw a bone to the supposed DD crossover. As with its predecessor the gameplay comes second to level design, humor, and design of the game's setting and characters.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Very inventive and memorable set pieces. The levels range from multiplane brawler to 2D platformer to those cursed hoverbikes and even an Asteroids clone. Not as good as the orignial, but lots of variety to keep things fresh.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Very silly. The only knock is the tacked on inclusion of Double Dragon characters. Why are they even here? It's an unnecessary inclusion that adds nothing to the game.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Great sprite work but some truly amazing pseudo-3D effects and parallax scrolling on the floors and foregrounds. Has to be seen to be believed.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Nice tunes and very good sound design. David Wise is a magician with the SNES sound chip.

Overall Score: 72
