Blades of Vengeance
The best Conan game on the GenesisGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Year: 1993
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Responsive controls. Three different characters to choose from. Conan, Sonia, and some wizard guy. They all control about the same although the girl can jump a little bit higher and has a weaker attack. Each character has three attacks, normal swing, a crouch swing, and hold up and attack to have a wide arced attack. Very high difficulty because enemies rush at you. Tons of platforming which works well enough because your jump is decent. Plays a lot like Legendary Axe for the TurboGrafx-16.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
The levels are linear with multiple branching paths which all lead to the same exit. Enemies pop out sometimes for cheap hits but mostly they're placed well. There's a lot of variety in the level designs which is nice. The levels themselves vary from lava-filled caves to dungeons or towers. It all has a very fantasy feel to it.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
What can I say? It's Conan the Barbarian. Between levels, a wizard-like guy appears to tell you about your next objective.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Huge sprites and excellent animation. In fact, all the sprites are drawn very well and are fun to look at. The backgrounds are extremely grainy and dark. There's not a lot of variety in the colors being used here.
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
Really really really bad music. It has multiple channels but most often it sounds like two different songs playing over each other at different tempos. The music is also extremely repetitive and gets on your nerves quickly. Sound effects are good with explosions and slashes but it doesn't make up for the horrible music.
