Blaster Master 2 for Genesis

Blaster Master 2

So bad the 2017 sequel counted backward

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Bizarre button presses to do things like to enter or exit your ship or caves. Down and C exits or enters the ship while up and A does the trick on caves. Riiiight Entering a cave switches to a sidescroller where the controls are even more stiff and unforgiving. You can't move and shoot at the same time, for example. Jason and his ship share health as does Jason in the caves. Stiff controls. Slow animations to rotate your turret up, down (forward), and turn left or right. Poor hit detection for simple things like climbing ladders. Huge main character sprite. Hard to avoid taking damage. Annoying enemy patterns. 20-30% draw distance

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

All the regular dumb Western dev tropes like drips and small narrow corridors with low ceilings. Unclear objectives and progression. I got a key but there aren't any locks - what is it for? Where do I go next?

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

No setup, no narrative, no cutscenes, no text crawl. Nothing. Am I playing as Jason from the original? Who knows

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Has that Amiga/Spectrum look but with washed out colors. The backgrounds are detailed but static. No parallax scrolling.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Yuck yuck yuck. Terribly composed tracks

Overall Score: 24
