Blockout for Genesis

Blockout

Hey, it's 3D Tetris! In color.

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

The player's perspective is that of looking down into a three-dimensional rectangular pit. Polycube blocks of various shapes appear, one at a time, and fall slowly toward the bottom of the pit. The player can use three buttons to rotate the block around any of the three coordinate axes, and can also maneuver the block horizontally and vertically with a joystick. Yes, I pulled that from Wikipedia because I don't care to explain it myself. In a nutshell it's a 3 dimensional Tetris clone. The grid on the top and sides of the pit make it fairly easy to figure out how to orient the falling piece but moving the piece is finicky. It often moves two spaces instead of one at a time so you have to spend time getting it just right. Sounds like a minor nuisance but it's a major problem since it's pretty much the only thing you do. Ultimately the gameplay gets old fast and doesn't have as much staying power as the much-simpler but more exciting Tetris.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There are a few different options which change the size of the pit and the types of blocks that fall. In general there are too few straight pieces for filling gaps so once you've missed a row you can kiss it goodbye. Overall this game feels like a concept that was never fully fleshed out into a real video game.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

Couldn't be less inviting if it tried. Presentation is the absolute barest of bones.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

You've got absolutely nothing to look at other than vector lines which are colored back on the depth of the pit. Again, barebones. But at least it uses more colors than just red. So it's got that oer 3D Tetris for the Virtual Boy.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

There is no music. At all. Bring your own tunes.

Overall Score: 32
