Bonanza Bros. for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Bonanza Bros.

Reminds me of Spy vs Spy. Thief vs Thief?

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Stiff and slow movement, but responsive and adequate for the game's slow pace. Shoot and jump and the only moves although the level is composed of two planes which you can toggle between. Reminds me a lot of Gunpoint for the PC. Minus the hacking mechanic obviously. The objective is to be stealthy but you can really just go in guns blazing, avoid enemy attacks, steal the stuff, and finish the level. Like most old arcade games, there's very little gameplay and most of the fun is in seeing the next level. It's a good time for a few minutes.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are well designed. They're all very short. Maybe one or two minutes long. The inclusion of a two-player co-op mode is fun, although I'd never play it that way.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The game looks and feels very silly. I like the theme where you're pretend thieves testing a company's security measures.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The graphics are incredibly basic, but there's great animation in the simple sprites. It's easy to see the three-dimensional features that you can jump over or back into. Again, it's very simple, but it's also very clean.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

A fun little song plays. It's very upbeat.

Overall Score: 61
