Bonkers for Genesis

Bonkers

Cabal meets Missile Command

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Yeah, it's a gallery shooter. I wasn't expecting that either. The SNES version was a pretty standard platformer but here it's a third person gallery shooter with some silly cartoon mechanics. This is another one of those insultingly easy and simple games for kids. And that's not so much a problem as the fact that all you do is mash a button. All three buttons do the same thing. They throw. There's almost nothing to it. It's as shallow as can be.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There are four levels. You can choose any level and can pause and go back to the title screen anytime as well. Each level is broken up into many successive screens so you can seemingly play until you're bored. Two of them play as a gallery shooter which is why I put this game into that genre. In one you're trying to prevent rats from getting to the front of the screen and grabbing a treasure and walking off with it. In the rat level, you're trying to build a wall by throwing bricks. The other two levels are weird. In the Mr. Big level you wander around a one screen maze, Pac-Man style, and break boxes until you collect a bunch of items. There's no enemies or time limit. In the final level you drive around from a top down view and drop oil slicks like you're in Super Spy Hunter.
