Boxyboy
aka Boxxle on the Gameboy and Shove It on GenesisGenre: puzzle - overhead
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1990
System: TurboGrafx-16
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Simple...just move to push boxes onto specific tiles. Each stage is a one screen puzzle with one possible solution. Plays like the mobile game Quell. Also reminds me of Goof Troop for the SNES. A really slimmed down version of Goof Troop that is. This version has a level editor that the Genesis and Game Boy versions lack.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Ingenious. I love the challenge of working out the solution without arbitrary constraints like a timer or limited lives. This is a game you can play through and come back to frequently. Difficult ramps up gently.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
You're a guy who pushes boxes. Not much to report. An animation plays between levels but it's always the same so I just skip it every time. Could've had a bit more personality.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Not a looker. Some of the simplest graphics of the 16 bit era. The graphics are a step up from the Genesis version but still incredibly basic.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
A pleasant song plays as you do. I like it
