Gameplay

Frequent random battles. And by frequent I mean constant. Like every 5 steps.
Way too much grinding.
Standard RPG gameplay. Plays like a 1992 RPG with no gimmick, innovation, or improvement on the formula.
Slow movement.
Investigating a bookshelf shows two windows of text wondering if there's something interesting and then reporting that there was or wasn't. The NES called and it wants its menus back.
Thankfully they replaced the icon based menus with normal text.

Level Design

A few interesting story elements and scenarios, like rescuing a playable character by defeating and then posing as her opponent in a gladiator match. The RPG mechanics are blah but the game design is pretty good.

Theme

Nintendo censors must have given up by 1995. This one has more religious references than Terranigma which was supposedly blocked by the censors.
The storyline is intriguing. I wanted to continue despite the crappy battle system due to the plot. It's a mix of Unknown, Les Miserables, and a typical RPG hero story.
Animorphic characters give the character models some much-appreciated variety. Not everyone is strictly human.

Art Style

The battle scenes are virtually impressive. Heck they might be the best looking RPG battle scenes on the SNES.

Audio

Good and bad. Many of the tracks are pleasant and Final Fantasy-esque, but some are downright awful, like the music in TagWoods looking for Baba.
