Bubble And Squeak

Baby escort

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Fluid and responsive controls. The jump feels great and horizontal movement is crisp. No floatiness or lag here. Limited move set. Jump and attack with a projectile. That's it.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Baffling level design. You collect gems and coins but there is no apparent way to use them. I reached the end of the first level but nothing happened. I revisited every part of the level to collect everything and returned to the end but again nothing I did would trigger the level to complete. Turns out you have a companion (Squeak) who has to be be escorted to the end of the stage. I couldn't figure out how to do this, unfortunately, and from what I've heard this is the main problem with the game. It's a core mechanic that ruins what would otherwise be a good game. Typical platforming in a box shaped area. I would love to see other areas but I'm unable to proceed further. I suspect this game has a lot more to offer.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

You're a bald baby with some sort of alien friend. Not sure what's going on but it's adorable so I enjoyed the setting. Reminds me of Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa for the Famicom.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Beautiful sprite work. Colorful but not nauseating like the Amiga ports. Wonderful animation. A bit of parallax scrolling but nothing noteworthy in terms of effects. Sickeningly cute sprites!

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Cute tune and decent sound effects. Nothing special but perfectly pleasant.

Overall Score: 62
